Busy Weekend in the Iron Mountain Area

June 26-29 will be a busy weekend in the Iron Mountain area, not only will our "normal" events be happening, but a few extra as well.


The City of Niagara, Wisconsin will be celebrating their Centennial on June 25th thru June 29th 2014. Come join the fun!! Live Headliner Bands, including the Kentucky Headhunters and 38 Special

Art for All, Saturday June 28 at Bay West College. This juried art show attracts people throughout the Upper Peninsula, Wisconsin and the Midwest.  Nearly 60 artists and craftsmen from across the country will exhibit at this juried art show, now in its 46th year. There will be live entertainment all day as well as food and beverage vendors. A hands-on craft area will be available for children and adults. The event, held rain or shine, will offer the chance to win door prizes and it is free to the public.


Northwood Triathlon. The 4th annual Northwoods Triathlon will be held at Lake Antoine Park on Sunday June 29. The Event includes:


Youth Triathlon: Swim 200 Feet, Bike 2 Mi, Run 1/2 Mi
Start Time: 11:30AM CST

Sprint Triathlon: Swim 500 Meters, Bike 17 Mi, Run 5K
Start Time: 8:00AM CST

Olympic Distance Triathlon: Swim 1500 Meters, Bike 40K Mi, Run 10K
Start Time: 7:30AM CST

Menominee Range Museums Open this week

The Cornish Pumping Engine and Mining Museum, along with the World War II Glider Military Museum, opens on Monday, June 2. Hours of operation for the season are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday and from noon to 4 p.m. on Sunday. The Cornish Pump and Glider museum are located at 300 Kent St. in Iron Mountain.
The Menominee Range Historical Foundation Museum, located at 300 East Ludington St. in Iron Mountain, opens its doors for the season on Tuesday, June 3. The museum is open Tuesday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
There are new displays at the glider museum this year. The Piper Cub and Heiserman airplanes were suspended from the ceiling. With space on the floor opening up, a 4 ft. by 10 ft. simulated gas station has filled in the area. It contains a refurbished gas pump, a 1930's Ford Dump truck and a Ford Car.

Fumee Lake Natural Area Walks

The Fumee Lake Natural Area is great place to get outside and check out nature. Spring and early Summer are great times to visit the area as everything starts to green and flower, especially after this years long winter! 

Here are a couple of early season events:

Sat May 31, 7am 
The Fumee Lake Commission invites the public to participate in their annual guided Bird Watching walk at the Fumee Lake Natural Area.

Warblers, Loons & Bald Eagles are a few of the species that may be seen on the walk. This is an easy walk at a slow pace on easy terrain. Walking distance is just over 1 mile and will last 2-3hrs.

Meet at the East parking lot off the Upper Pine Creek Rd (off US2 between Quinnesec and Norway). Participants should dress for the weather and wear comfortable walking shoes. A bird guide and binoculars are suggested. Photographers are encouraged to bring their cameras.


Sat June 7, 8am

There is no charge to participate and a County park sticker in not required.

75th Anniversary of Ski Jumping Returns to Giant Pine Mountain



The 75th Anniversary of Ski Jumping Returns to Giant Pine Mountain in Iron Mountain, Michigan


 


More than 10 Countries are expected to participate in the 2014 Bellin Health Pine Mountain Continental Cup Ski Jumping Competition in Iron Mountain, Michigan, February 7, 8 & 9.  This is the only International Ski Jumping event going on in the World this weekend with the exception of the Sochi Olympics so many of the Worlds best jumpers will be in Iron Mountain.


Celebrating the 75th year ski jumpers from around the globe will gather in Iron Mountain to try and claim king of the mountain at the 120 meter Pine Mountain Ski Jump.  Known around the world as one of the more challenging ski jumping venues, Giant Pine Mountain over time has attracted some of the World’s Best.  Countries expected to compete in the 2014 competition include Austria, Switzerland, Czech Republic, Norway, Sweden, Poland, Slovenia, Canada, Kazakhstan, Finland, Germany, Turkey and of course the United States.  New for 2014, there will be 3DAYS OF COMPETITION – FRIDAY, SATURDAY AND SUNDAY. 


 


The schedule of events include:


 


            Thursday February 6,  6pm – 8pm “Meet The Skiers” at Pine Mountain Resort


                        This is an informal gathering to meet the skiers and coaches as well as get


                        Autographs. There is no charge for this event, although reservations are requested


                        by calling the Dickinson Area Partnership at 906-774-2002.


           


Friday February 7 – Training rounds will start at 10:30 AM


        COMPETITION 1 1:30pm


                       


            Saturday February 8– 11:00am Trial Round;  Opening Ceremony 12:15pm; COMPETITION 2 1:00pm


           


Sunday February 9– 11:00am Trial Round;  COMPETITON 3 1:00pm

Booster (admission) Buttons are available at numerous locations throughout the Iron Mountain/Kingsford area or by mail order thru the Dickinson Area Partnership by calling 1-906-774-2002. Buttons are $20 for Adults and $15 for Students 11-17 years of age; 10 and under are free.  Pre-Sales end Thursday February 6 after which time you may purchase you button at the entrance to the event.  Gate prices are $25 for Adults and $20 for Students.  Concessions available on site but carry-ins and tailgating are welcomed.


 


This is the largest tailgate party in the Midwest in the month of February!!!


 


Making a special appearance on both Saturday and Sunday will be the Midwest’s Famous “Grillologists” Mad Dog & Merrill.
